My life has always been characterized by the desire to do something different, to explore new horizons, and to push the limits whenever possible. I feel compelled to create, not just build something for the sake of building it, but a very real need to make something uniquely mine.
I have always been inspired by the beauty of nature. It may have been a beautiful sunset, the interesting depth and curves you see in a cave, the twisting spiraling beauty of a tree, or just the simple placement of a boulder on a mountain.
In my years of working with clay, I would try and capture these same qualities through my colorful overlapping, glazing technique, and the ability to bend, twist, and shape an object using the potter’s wheel in a way that would at times mimic some of the beauties of nature that we see every day.
In building furniture, I would at times create pieces that were very organic, simulating the strength and curvatures of a tree trunk when doing table legs, or trying to replicate the feel of the caves I so admired over the years. I then built pieces that had wonderful random geometric patterns to them, almost like looking at the night sky and seeing the connectivity of the planets and stars, or a simple fallen tree connecting one side of a river bank to another.
In my sculptures I have continued to combine many of these elements. The beautiful color and interesting grain patterns of the different woods add an unequaled beauty to my pieces. I try and place the pieces so they push the sense of balance. The “tunnels” I add put a perspective of wanting to see what is on the other side, and also allowing light to come through, as a ray of sunshine through the clouds.
As in nature, where no two things are exactly the same, my sculptures are each unique, and the possibilities are endless. With the construction and finishing of one, it brings the excitement and enthusiasm of going on to the next one, learning from the previous pieces and creating a new piece that stimulates both myself, and anyone that takes the time to experience and enjoy them.
